Most of the repatriated American Impressionists lived in the Northeast, tapping into the cultural energy that was increasingly concentrated in New York. Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement characterized by relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles.

This is the standard discussion of American Impressionism and rightly so. Gerdts text is sharp, economical and insightful. Unfortunately there are FAR too many black and white reproductions of important paintings that require extended discussion, and of course color is key to all impressionist art.
